Perfume

Why same perfume smells different on everyone?

There are a few reasons why perfume smells different o people. Various reasons may contribute to how a
fragrance finally performs on you. Hopefully, the information given below will give some clarity on why perfume
smells different on people and also their performance.
1) Body odor and skin - Some people have a stronger body odor than others, which is also partly due to
genetics and also due to the food we consume. If you eat a lot of garlic, onion, spices etc you will have a
different body odor from someone who eats fruits, veggies and a bland diet.
If you are sweating and have applied perfume on your chest then your fragrance is in an acidic pH instead of
normal neutral pH of your skin. So the change in skin pH, skin temperature and microbiome change, will affect
how your fragrance smells and performs.
Also your skin type, people with oily skin will have fragrance lasting on them longer and are more suitable for
floral and citrus type but not sweet fragrances. Whereas, people with dry skin are more suitable for musky and
woody scents.
2) Emotions - Depends when you have smelled a fragrance and your emotional state at that time as well as the
perception. If you don't like a person then you may not not like their fragrance too, so you are less likely to try it
out and also may not like it on someone you like because it reminds you of that particular person you first
smelled the fragrance on.
3) Environment - Depending on the climate the perfume will smell different. Fragrances meant for colder
climate wont have the same appeal and zest to it in warmer climates. So the fragrance family and weather
compatibility will make your fragrance smell different. On a dry cold day a perfume will last longer but won't
project as much, where as on a hot humid day a perfume will evaporate quickly but will smell stronger and
have high projection.
Also, you can be in an environment which has its own distinct odour or combination of smells which is making
your fragrance smell different. It can be your car freshener, room freshener, people around you wearing
different perfumes, etc. will contribute to how your perfume smells to you and others.
That is why depending on your surroundings be it on a busy street, restaurant, office, wedding, nature,
conference etc, special occasion fragrances may not be ideal for every occasion just like clothes.
4) Using other products - Your body wash , your body lotion, your moisturiser, oils you are applying all have a
fragrance which maybe from a different fragrance family, from the one you are wearing. Same applies to your
fabric freshener and detergent used for clothes. All these will make your fragrance smell different, from
someone wearing the same fragrance but different products along with it.
